We are devastated by the sudden loss of our dear husband, son, brother and uncle.

The family of Barak Cahen, 51, of Greenwich are deeply saddened to announce the unexpected passing of their son and brother at his home outside of Amsterdam, with his wife Sharon by his side.

Born in Albany in 1970, Barak was the youngest child of Gideon and Elaine Cahen of Greenwich. He graduated from Greenwich Central School in 1988 and in 1990 earned an Associate’s degree in Graphic Design from the Junior College of Albany. He then earned his Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Industrial Design from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1992. The following year, Barak moved to The Netherlands—the homeland of his father—where he began as an industrial design professional in Amsterdam, though would soon shift to teaching design technology and eventually Food Technology/Design, where he enjoyed a distinguished and fulfilling career in secondary education in an international school, educating thousands of students from all parts of the globe over his 25-plus year career there.

Barak was completely dedicated to teaching at the highest level while also making his classroom laboratory a welcoming and fun place for his students. His manner with children was extraordinary and he wrote to his wife Sharon that he was “born to work with children.” He will be remembered for his extraordinary kindness, willingness to help others, his huge smile, and sense of fun. He will be missed beyond measure.

In 2012 Barak was predeceased by his father Gideon. Left to cherish his memory are his loving partner of 17 years, his wife Sharon Titus Cahen of Amstelveen, The Netherlands; his mother Elaine and brother Adam of Greenwich; his sister Alison Cahen Lohr, brother-in-law Fred, niece Lucie, and nephew Oscar of London, England, as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, and close friends worldwide, none closer than his childhood friend Darin Raney of Greenwich.

A memorial service will be held in Amsterdam on Saturday, March 19, 2022. His stateside memorial service will be announced in the Spring of 2022.

FROM JAMES AND BRENDA MCCASLAND/maternal uncle of Barak

Barak was one of the finest young men we have ever known. Having him taken away from us so suddenly was unbelievably sad for our family.

We remember Barak’s positive outlook on life and his never-ending cheerful smile as he made his way through life. He was always kind and respectful to his mother and father, and until his passing, he called his mother Elaine every single day, except when she was sick—then he called her twice a day! What a loving son!

Brenda and I enjoyed the phone calls Barak made to us from Amsterdam. He was so upbeat even in the face of adversity.

One of our favorite memories was when our family spent one summer at the Cahen’s beautiful country home. There Adam, Cricket, Barak, Darrick and Nara all played, romped together, and became lasting cousin friends forever. We will all miss Barak very much, and hold these cherished memories in our hearts forever.

-From the Jim McCasland family

I was one of Baraks students and I can’t even begin to explain what a wonderful person he was. Every room he walked into was immediately brightened by his fun and kind personality. It feels strange to hear that he’s gone as I have now moved schools and haven’t been as connected with my past teachers as I should have been. Words can’t explain how heartbroken I am. Mr Cahan from all your students, we love you so much, may you be in a better place and bring your light wherever you go. ❤️❤️❤️

Yesterday someone was singing in the hallway, and for one wishful second, I thought it was you. I still cannot believe you are gone. You did so much for me, Barak, your kindness essentially kept me alive during my first year here. You went out of your way to help this kiddo left right and center, and you opened your home to me and even my visitors. I never thanked you enough.

Your unlimited source of energy was a mystery as you never once stopped running around helping everyone make their days better. Perhaps you finally got tired. I hope you are getting a good rest now. ISA will never be the same without you, but your legend will live on. Whenever there is someone in need, I will ask myself, “what would Barak do?” and do the kind thing, even if I haven’t got the correct specialty screwdriver or drill bit.

Barak, you will be forever missed and never forgotten. Sharon and your family are in my thoughts.

It is still not real! – I avoid walking by your classroom because I keep thinking I’ll hear your laugh!

To Sharon, Elaine, Alison and Adam and all of his family: we send out heartfelt sympathies as they process the loss of this fabulous human! We are thankful for our time with Barak.

Talar and I had the honour to speak at your celebration of life! Here is what we wrote:

Today is a day we celebrate Barak – though our hearts are broken we want to embrace all that he was and all that he meant to the ISA community.

Barak meant so much to so many in our community. He was that constant, for twenty-five years when you walked by his room you would hear his voice and his laugh – his door always open and him ready for a quick hello and a chat!

He had this way about him. He has this joyful spirit and that attuned ability to be there just when you need it the most. Whether it was his shots of ginger, a cuppa coffee or a simple thing that needed fixing, he was there. – Ah, the fixing – B wanted to fix everything. He had tools for every job and took all the time in the world to explain each step of the complicated process to you even if the job was as simple as getting a broken key out of the bike lock – It may have been a complicated process but most of the time he was right. And it was fixed. It didn’t matter what the dilema was, he was ready to help anyone at any time. He truly was one in a million.

As we reminisce and share all that he was, it was evident that our Barak embraced love, laughter and camaraderie. When you saw that twinkle in his eye, cheeky grin, and that skip in his step, you always knew he was up to something – and oh the laughs, -oh the memories – we made together and I know that each of us here today can think of a time where he made you laugh or made you feel special.

His caring and charismatic nature also transferred into his classroom. He was present for the students. Barak’s quick wit and ability to make people laugh allowed him to make wonderful connections with his students. He was their safe haven. For so many years his room was the gathering place for students during lunch. It was always filled with laughter and fun – Mr Cahen was their teacher, and he was there in the mix.

When you read the tributes from students you see he made a difference in many lives. Their memories of their time with Mr Cahen are a testament to who he was as a person and as an educator – and we are glad that we could be part of his world. His caring ways could be found in all that he did for ISA – when Barak does something he is fully committed to it and he was actively involved in a long list of things.

He was a founding member of the Green teamStarting the garden at schoolThe PTA lunchesLet’s CookThanksgiving dinnersThe PTA BBQ’s, Oh, don’t forget, the TGIF Social committeeThe Nutrition committee BHV

Giving, caring and sharing Barak gave us his all = he did it because he loved to be there for others … without asking for anything in return. And that is his legacy that we will take with us and something we all can do to honour Barak – we can be kind and we can be giving to those around us – just like B did each and every day.

And now we must do the one thing we do not want to do and that is to say Goodbye – Goodbye my friend goodbye – you will be missed today and forever. You are all that ISA should be and though your light has faded, your memory will live on in all of us.

We miss you each and every day Barakie! Thanks for the laugh and the fabulous memories xoxo

Mr. Cahen and his Food Tech lab have a very special place in our fond memories of ISA.
